Year 2 – National Phonics Screening Test

Year 2 – National Phonics Screening Test

Thursday 5th November 2020

Dear Parents / Carers,

Your child will soon be assessed on the National Phonics Screening Test at the end of November. This test should have been carried out in the Summer term, however, due to Covid-19 and school closures, the Government have moved this National test to the Autumn term.

The test will be carried out across the final week of November. The screener will take place in a relaxed environment with a familiar member of staff and this check will take a similar format to tasks that the children already use in their daily phonics sessions. Your children have been working so hard in school and we are delighted with the progress they have made with their phonics since they have returned to school in September.

Tonight, your child will be bringing home a range of phonics activities that you can use to practice with. There will be a range of reading tasks, writing tasks and games. Each of these activities will show real words and alien words (nonsense words). Your child should add the sound buttons then try and read the words carefully.

We ask that you complete some of these activities, little and often, to support your child in the final weeks leading up to the screener. We would also encourage you to practice the sounds found on the Phase 2, 3 and 5 phonics mats.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact a member of the Year 2 staff.

Thank you for your continued support.

Mr Routledge, Miss Reynolds and Mrs Yates
