Sun Safety
Dear parent / carer
We have taken the recent heatwave as an opportunity to clarify our position on sun safety and sunscreen moving forward.
Whole school
For all children, if you feel they may need sunscreen, this must be applied by a parent / carer before the school day. We recommend a long lasting or ‘all day’ sunscreen. All children should come to school with a sun hat in periods of extreme heat.
Year 1 – Year 6
We do not expect that children in Year 1 to Year 6 will need to reapply sunscreen during the school day. Children in these year groups do not spend as much time outdoors and an all day application of sunscreen before the school day should ensure that reapplication is not required. Reapplication during the school day may be considered in periods of extreme heat / UV if children are also spending greater periods of time outdoors or attend OOSC.
Early Years (Nursery & Reception)
Children in the Early Years may require reapplication of sunscreen during the school day due to having thinner skin and spending a greater proportion of the day outdoors. Staff will offer as limited assistance as possible and children should be encouraged to apply their own sunscreen at home to practice for this.
For any children who require reapplication of sunscreen in school
If you think your child will need to reapply sunscreen during the school day, you must:
- Provide a named bottle of sunscreen
- Hand sunscreen to staff at drop off (do not send in children’s bags)
- Advise your child never to share their sunscreen with others (some children have allergies)
- Complete a Sun Safety Permission Slip to allow your child to reapply sunscreen during the school day under supervision of staff (available from the office and to be handed to staff at drop off along with your named bottle of sunscreen)
This will come into effect from Monday 6th July 2026. After this time, if your child does not have a signed permission slip, they will not be allowed to apply sunscreen in school.
A full copy of our Sun Safety Policy can be found on our website.
Thank you
