The teaching of Religious Education is very important at King Edward Primary School. Within our school and the wider local community, we recognise there are many and very varied beliefs. Pupils are required to have a deep knowledge, understanding and tolerance of those with other faiths and beliefs, and also of those with none.
Our lessons provide the children with an open and safe environment where they can learn about the experiences of others, develop their understanding and question and consider a range of different views, whether the views are religious or non-religious.
Our lessons also encourage the children to develop their own sense of identify and beliefs through personal reflection and their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
We value the importance of empathy and through our lessons we promote respect for the rights of others to hold different beliefs, values and ideas.
We follow the North Tyneside Agreed Syllabus which enhances the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of all pupils, offering strong continuity and progression within and between key stages.
Children in EYFS study celebrations from different worldwide religions, such as Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam and Judaism. Children in Key Stage 1 study: Christianity, Buddhism and what we can learn about the faiths within our community. Finally, Key Stage 2 children study: Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism and what we can learn about the religious diversity within our local area.
During lessons, the children will listen to people speak about their beliefs, analyse religious artefacts and texts and look at images related to religions. We also value the importance of educational visits and our children have had wonderful experiences learning about the importance of the physical building to those of a range of other faiths.
