At King Edward Primary School, we strongly believe in a broad and balanced curriculum for all. Our aims are to fulfill the National Curriculum for Geography and then go beyond; providing a differentiated, wide-ranging curriculum; ensuring the development of key geographical concepts, knowledge and skills, and for our children to develop a love for Geography.
We aim to allow children to have a variety of geographical skills, a good knowledge of the world around them, to ask questions about natural phenomena and to develop an understanding and appreciation of different cultures.
To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in Geography, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. This helps our children develop a sense of self within the world. Then as they grow, the world grows for them as they move through their primary education. Geography is taught as part of a termly topic, focusing on knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum.
Out termly topics often work closely with history, allowing the children to make meaningful cross-curricular links. Our approach allows the children to see how countries and cultures have developed over time and to understand and appreciate our ever-evolving world.
In order to promote a greater appreciation and love of geography, our school is passionate about offering a variety of educational trips. These range from orienteering and fieldwork opportunities in the local area to fully immersive experiences further afield. We also have an annual 'Geography Day' in which the children explore one of the 7 Natural Wonders; a day that inspires the children to think as geographers and to discover more about our wonderful world.
