Smartphones
At King Edward Primary, we recognise the growing presence of mobile phones in the lives of children and the benefits they can offer in terms of communication and learning. However, we also understand the importance of establishing boundaries around their use to ensure the wellbeing, safety, and developmental needs of our pupils.
To this end, we encourage families to consider fostering a balanced approach to mobile phone use, particularly with younger children. While we understand the necessity of phones for safety or communication, we recommend limiting their use to appropriate times and places, such as for emergency contact or family arrangements.
We are strong advocates of creating opportunities for children to engage in technology-free activities, which help to develop social skills, creativity, and resilience. The organisation Smartphone Free Childhood offers fantastic ideas and resources for families looking to create a healthier balance around screen time. We encourage parents to explore their advice to support positive habits and foster a childhood rich in play, imagination, and real-world connections.
At school, we maintain a clear policy that ensures mobile phones, where brought in for essential reasons, are switched off and kept in a secure place during the school day. This helps to maintain a focused and inclusive learning environment for all.
Thank you for your support in helping us nurture the wellbeing and development of our pupils.
