Curriculum and Outcomes Committee Governors Meeting Overview

The Curriculum and Outcomes Committee met virtually last week to discuss all aspects of teaching and learning.  We heard about the procedures that were put into place to support all of the children and staff back to school in September.  It is clear that our school is taking this seriously and the plans have taken into consideration site safety, health & well-being and educational progress.
One of the main agenda items was the school Covid recovery plan and the use of the associated budget.  A number of strategies are being developed by school to support all children, including investment in online learning tools and the use of small group teaching for specific gaps in knowledge as they are identified.  The governors as a whole and specifically this committee will be kept up to date on the progress of this plan.
Updates were also given about the ongoing development of the school curriculum.  Last academic year, our school were part of the pilot for the new RSE (Relationships and sex education) curriculum.  The RSE curriculum will be fully implemented this year, although not yet fully statutory.  In addition, our Early Years team will be one of only a few North Tyneside schools to be participating in the early adopter framework for Nursery and Reception classes.  Work to ensure the success of this new framework was developed throughout our first national lockdown and the team have been supported by local authority training which was also attended by governors.  It was reassuring to hear that school continues to plan for and provide excellent opportunities for our children despite the ongoing challenges caused by Covid.
Staff had the opportunity to explain to the committee how Nigel, our new school dog, had been welcomed into the whole of school life by children and staff (even the sceptics!).  They reported increased motivation and demonstrable benefits to behaviour management.  It is clear that Nigel is now a firmly established member of the KEPS community!
