Growing up in North Tyneside: Health and Wellbeing Survey – Years 4, 5 & 6

Dear Parents and Carers,

Growing up in North Tyneside: Health and Wellbeing Survey

All schools in North Tyneside have been asked to participate in a very important Health and Wellbeing survey, led by the Public Health and School Improvement team’s in the Local Authority.  The survey is anonymous and confidential, and no individual pupil will be identified. Primary and Secondary schools have been asked to carry out the survey across years 4, 6, 8 and 10, with the option to include other year groups as required.

Our school has agreed to take part as it presents a unique opportunity to gain insights into how our children and young people self-assess their health, wellbeing and resilience. Our school will also benefit substantially by taking part in the survey as the findings will guide the curriculum and give starting point for discussion in classroom activities.

The findings will also give population level data and help the Local Authority and NHS to commission and shape support and services to make them suitable to needs.

The survey being used was developed by the Schools Health Education Unit (SHEU), Exeter and has been in use now for over 30 years. Over 3000 schools have used the survey, many of them regularly repeating the survey. The privacy notice on the reverse of this letter provides more information.

The questions concern a wide range of lifestyle and behaviours including:

  • Growing up in North Tyneside
  • Friendships and Relationships
  • Emotional health and well-being
  • Food choices and physical activity levels
  • Tobacco, Alcohol, Drugs (appropriate to age range)

Both the Local Authority and the school find the content of the questionnaire acceptable; it has been customised to suit our local setting in North Tyneside.

I hope you will agree with us that this is an exercise in which we wish to co-operate fully. I will assume you do approve unless I hear otherwise. We hold a copy of the survey in the school office, and if you would like to examine it, you are welcome to do so by appointment.

The survey will be carried out during March.

Yours sincerely

Miss Byrne
